What is the electronics industry sector?

The electronics industry is focused on developing products whose primary function is to process information. These items are generally classified into six sub-sectors:

Computers: encompasses most of the items used in homes and offices, such as computers, printers, photocopiers, monitors, and even network servers.

Electronic components: diodes, transistors, and integrated circuits, among others.

Communicators: telecommunications equipment, fax machines, smartphones, etc.

Audio and video: audiovisual file players such as DVD, home theater, radios, televisions, video game consoles, cameras, and camcorders.

Medical equipment and precision and measuring instruments: covers equipment used in hospitals.

Due to its technical characteristics and constant evolution, the electronics industry is one of the most complex branches. As a sector feeds different industrial branches, it requires specialized workers.

Two main categories within the electronic components are determined according to their materials and use: active and passive components.

The primary function of active components is to control, store information, or interpret electrical signals; these devices are manufactured from semiconductors. On the other hand, passive components serve as a complement within the circuits and are manufactured from chemical substrates.

The electronics industry in the global landscape

Due to the semiconductor crisis and production bottlenecks, the electronics industry remained underperforming, even suffering declines in sales and manufacturing during 2020.

However, this trend was quickly overcome. In 2021, the development of new products and a rise in prices led to significant growth in the electronics sector. Another factor that boosted the industry was its large number of production hubs. This branch includes companies that manufacture everything from 4K monitors or touch screens to resistors or circuit boards.

Another critical milestone demonstrating the industry’s rapid and constant innovation is the large-scale production of new nanotechnology, particularly 5nm technology. These processors and semiconductors are more energy-efficient and faster in information processing. Since 2020, it has become a standard in various industries, such as telecommunications and computing.

Although the crisis in this sector was recent globally, the outlook seems quite positive. The broad base of industries linked to electronics, digitization processes in almost all industrial sectors, and the constant search for innovation give companies great encouragement.

The role of Mexico and the United States in the sector

Mexico’s role in the electronics industry has become vital, especially for the U.S. market, one of the leading investors and importers of products assembled in the country.

According to data from the National Statistical Directory of Economic Units (DENUE), in 2021, at least 481 companies related to the manufacture of electronic components were registered in the country. The most benefited states were Baja California, Jalisco, and Chihuahua. Within these states, border cities such as Juarez, Tijuana, and Nogales (in the case of Sonora) stand out.

The products most frequently assembled in the country are Smart TVs, Smartphones, computers, electromedical equipment, and electronic components necessary for developing other high-tech devices.

Thanks to the professionalization of the Mexican labor force, the country has remained the leading supplier of televisions for the U.S. market, as well as one of the top producers of smartphones worldwide.

The importance of Ciudad Juarez in the development

Ciudad Juárez, located north of Chihuahua, has become an essential focus for technology companies. The electronics and machinery sector alone accounted for 84% of exports in 2014.

Of all the manufacturing companies located in the locality, those involved with electronics represent a 17% share, the city’s second most important sector.

AMN and the importance of the development of the electronics industry

In 1991 AMN began to collaborate with companies from different industrial sectors, offering quality services, logistics, advanced manufacturing, and electronic components. The vision of the company’s members and professionals in various industrial areas made AMN a pioneer and leader in the region.

AMN has been concerned with keeping local suppliers at the forefront of the industry, making it possible for the local sector to integrate into the global market. This has been thanks to the disruptive processes that set precedents in the growth of our customers.
